Data monitoring dashboard: aviation activity, economic health and climate impact

About the Challenge

We are seeking solutions to:

  1. Consider how governments can manage aviation travel restrictions to minimise the detrimental economic impact while minimising the risk of a second wave of COVID-19
  2. Consider what procedures industry bodies (airports, airlines, regulators) can put in place to reduce spread of the virus and how these may impact the government’s approach to travel restrictions
  3. Analyse the benefit of the resumption of aviation services to the economy

What are you looking to achieve?

Using various datasets (e.g. current passenger traffic volumes, government declarations on travel restrictions, ADS-B data on current aircraft movements, etc) we seek to track – in real time – the current status of the aviation sector, as well as its economic impact and environmental footprint.

Note: this aggregation of data will be complementary to the related “Analysis and forecasting” challenge which will then assess the impact of specific actions airlines and governments to serve as a decision making tool.

To track the current status of the sector, it is proposed that 3 types of data be tracked in the “dashboard”: travel restrictions, aviation status, and aviation impact.

What will be the Value and Impact?

Aviation underpins society and the economy – yet, it was a key vector for SARS-CoV-2 transmission, inadvertently exporting the virus all over the world.
As the world recovers from the crisis, the risk of a second wave or re-infection (with the original or mutated version of the virus) remains very real.
The speed at which air corridors are reopened is crucial in managing this risk: a main objective of this charter is to relate global health risk to the economic benefits associated with resumption of air travel to allow better decision making.
